What could we do to fill our holiday?
• Get out in the air and go hiking or walking. There are so many trails and routes suitable for all levels and capabilities. Whether you choose to walk up the hills on the West Highland way for a picnic or bag some Munros there is something for everyone to be found. We have several walking route guidance on our main website which will provide you with lots of information on where to go. Within Perthshire alone there are over 10 Munros, so you wont have to travel far to get your hill kick when you get your motorhome.
o A munro is a mountain in Scotland that reaches over 3000feet or 914 metres. There are so many blogs and guidance on which to bag and where people start. Do some research prior to embarking on these and ensure you are both equipped and fit enough for the challenge. There are some incredible panoramic views to be had from the Munros.
• Cycling within Scotland is so popular. There are many different types of cycling from road, leisure or of course mountain biking. We prefer mountain biking and with a motorhome we find they are so accessible and you can visit lots of different trails. We recommend,
o Laggan Wolftrax, there is so much here that if you are a beginner or an experienced racer you will find something to suit your needs. There is a lovely green family trail which lends itself to some quality family time and a picnic halfway round. The cafe here is incredible and they also have a bike shop.
o Fort William, the uplift here lends itself to explore the mountain and also enjoy the huge decent down, there is a blue trail here for those who have some experience but also remember its a long one so ensure you and if you have children are capable. If you don’t fancy heading to the top they have built lots of trails in the lower woods suitable for beginners to experts. The kids can have fun on the pump track, try out there first wooden bridge and test out some short trails before heading further up.
o Comrie Croft, has bike hire and a wonderful pump track for all abilities at the bottom. They offer classes and training for adults and children. The car park is spacious and it is scenic from the top. They have been carrying out alot of work here and they have recently upgraded the blue and the pump track, so head over and see the work they have done.
• Water sports has become much more popular over the past few years. There are so many spaces of water where you can take your own paddleboards, kayaks or simply paddle, swim. Be aware that not all open water is safe and that you have life vests, have researched and know your own capabilities. Loch Morlich by Aviemore provides a great space for hiring equipment and trying your hand at a new sport. If you are over at St Andrews why not head to Blown Away where they will give you a day to remember with all sorts of water sports on offer and the owners are fabulous! Outdoor Activities, Landyachting St Andrews, Surf School Scotland (blownaway.co.uk) There are of course some lovely boat trips to be had from Oban where you can spot lots of wildlife such as seals.
• We are avid golfers over here at Scottish Tourer and if this is of interest to you head over to our main website and take a look at where we recommend. We are happy to offer advice and recommendations of where to try out and where to start. https://www.scottishtourer.co.uk/holiday/golfing-in-scotland
• Beach bagging. We love spending a day by the beach and there are some beaches in Scotland that will feel like you have been transported to a tropical island. If you are heading to Fife, St Andrews Beach is amazing although often busy in the summer months, Broughty Ferry, Monifeith and Tentsmuir offer some of the best beaches and also have playparks close by so you can offer the kids lots to see and do. Many of the beaches up North near Lossiemouth and Elgin offer a sight of the war and many still have some bunkers which can be explored. Share that history on your holiday and don’t forget an important part of our heritage. Over to the Islands of Harris and Arran you will find some of the whitest beaches i have ever seen and on a Summers Day you feel like you could be in Barbados. Be sure to tell us which was your favourite so we can share with others.
• Rock Climbing is a plenty in Scotland and although we don’t do this we are told tehre are plenty of places to embrace this such as Glen Coe, Isle of Skye and the Torridon Mountains.
• Take yourself of a wildlife safari, get yourself a checklist of animals and see what you can find, from the red deer, red squirrels to the more elusive wildcats and pinemartens. There are so many animals to spot and this can be a fun week filled activity to see how many different animals you can spot whilst on the move.
These are just a few examples of the exciting outdoor activities you can enjoy in Scotland. Remember to plan and prepare appropriately, especially in terms of weather conditions and safety precautions, to make the most of your outdoor adventures.
