So you’ve just bought a Scottish Tourer Motorhome!

But are you thinking, it’s now winter where will we go? What will we do? Well we are here to help with that with some handy tips and recommendations for Winter Motorhoming. There are many benefits to driving off in the winter months including,

  • Many tourist locations will be quieter in the winter giving you more freedom to explore and more time to spend here. You may even be lucky and gain an overnight spot at many more locations as there are less motorhomes on the roads.
  • You won’t be cold; this is a common misconception about wild camping in winter. If your motorhome has heating and you use it the way, it’s designed you will have a warm home to go back to after being out exploring. It’s so lovely to come in after a chilly crisp winter’s day to a cosy and warm motorhome to have some supper.

Where would be best to go?

Anywhere really, in the winter we do tend to check the weather the day we are leaving to ascertain where may be best avoided. Some roads can be impassable in winter and if there has been snow perhaps the high up passes will be off bounds. However Aviemore has so much to offer all year round and they really embrace the Christmas Spirit they often have a Santa run and lots of activities for the children, such as meet Santa, feed the reindeer or simply take the shopping opportunities here.

Some islands may be colder and harsher weather such as Orkney. However if you head over to Skye or even Arran you will be greeted with some wonderful sunrises, sunsets and beautiful walks along a semi frozen beach. These Islands offer lovely warm cosy pubs that offer freshly cooked local foods and your always welcomed warmly which is a lovely experience.

How hard is WIldcamping?

Really easy when you get your confidence and you remember a few very simple but effect top tips,
Ensure you leave no trace, leave only footprints and take only memories away with you. This offers the next people in your footsteps to enjoy the area like you have.

  • Pick up litter if you see it and ensure you take yours away with you.
  • Park carefully We recommend the Search for sites app this will help you find appropriate place to park overnight.
  • Find your parking space in daylight, this sounds simple but remember it gets dark early in winter, and it is so much easier to see and assess the area if it’s daylight.
  • Check the ground, this means for levelness, you don’t want to be sleeping on an angle but also check the firmness of the ground if it is likely to rain you don’t want to end up stuck and have no way to get out.

Most importantly enjoy your new motorhome. Take time to get to know the inner workings of your van, what you enjoy doing and what you need. We have found over the years we used to overpack and take far to much with us. Over the years we have got better at streamlining our belongings and it has helped us hugely.
