Reasons to Visit and Explore Scotland in 2024

by Scottish Tourer November 04, 2024

If looking to find out more about Scotland's history .....

Many may not know but 2024 was the 750th anniversary of our very own Robert the Bruce. For those that aren’t so familiar with Robert he was one of our most famous rulers and a king who fought for our Scottish independence in the 14th Century. He really travelled well and his story can be linked all over Scotland.

  • Stirling Castle is perhaps the best known place to learn about the history that is steeped with Robert as the site of the Battle of Bannockburn is nearby. There are some incredible views, information and of course the monument in his memory to visit. The children can get to dress up at the castle and there is so much to see and do to keep minds young and older occupied. At the site of Bannockburn you can take command of your own virtual battle and re-create  history. Be mindful this can get really busy at peak times and you may need to book tickets in advance.
  • Scone Palace where Robert was once crowned, along with many others such as Macbeth and Charles II. Here you can visit where they would have walked to their coronation, marvel at the grounds and even take a look at Mary Queen of Scots bedhangings that she worked on whilst imprisoned at Loch Leven. There is a gift shop, wonderful cafe and its accessible to all here so worth a visit when you are a stones throw away when you collect your motorhome.
  • Bruce’s Stone is another famous trip to tick off your bucket list on the top of the hill on the north side of Loch Trool. This stone commemorates Roberts victory over the English Army in 1307. Here is also the starting spot for the walk up Merrick which is no mean feet of 2764ft and the highest mountain in Southern Scotland.

Things to see and do in Fife ....

  • If heading over to Fife, there are so many farms that offer pick your own fruit experiences. Our personal favourite is Carnie Fruit Farm. Cairnie Fruit Farm have a different maze each year which is great fun and really is a challenge to navigate and find all the clues!
  • The farm shops , home made goods and fresh vegetables to take home. Nothing beats fresh corn on the cob wrapped in tin foil on the BBQ with a good helping of butter! Some of the other farms to look out for are Pillars of Hercules - Organic Food, Wholefood  and Pittormie Fruit Farm.
  • In addition to the farms, Fife has some stunning coastal walks at Crail and Anstruther where you can then get some of the very best fish and chips and eat it by the fresh sea air.
  • The secret Bunker by Anstruther is worth a visit especially on a rainy day as it will transport you back to the Cold War. The bunker itself is 100ft underground with a hidden entrance in a farmhouse. It was built by the RAF in 1953 in response to a nuclear threat. Here you can learn about the radar technology of the time, see the dormitories, plotting rooms and outside you can now see old machinery and learn about them. Its a fantastic day out. The Borders ...

  • If your more of a sky watcher why not head over to Dumfries and Galloway where you can see the night sky is real action. With rural locations away from the pollution of the cities here you can often catch sights of shooting stars, find constellations and even see some planets.
  • This area is incredible for walking and picnics. There are short and sweet walks if your walking with younger children or your taking it easy, to long steep routes to challenge your fitness levels. The Southern upland way is a coast to coast route that has 212 miles that runs from Portpatrick to Cockburnspath. Just be sure to check the weather and the equipment you need before you set off. You want to make it back to your comfort of your motorhome for supper and some well earned rest.

 Highlands ...

  • Nairn up by Inverness believe it or not is one of the sunniest places to be found in Scotland. The beach here is incredible and it makes a perfect base for walking, cycling and golfing.
  • Culbin Forest takes you to the edge of the beach and is a beautiful location for a family day out, romantic stroll or a solo trip. Here you can embrace the weather , good or bad, the wildlife and the spectacular views of the beach, forest and the water. We have been known to dip our toes in the water here even in winter as there is something really magical about this place that holds in our hearts when we are passing. You cant help but stop in for a few hours.

Perthshire ...

  • Sometimes its nice to stay local in Perthshire here you can go for countless forest walks, the Bluebell woods by Murthly is a stunning walk regardless of the time of year and a stop in at Stewart Towers for Ice cream just ten minutes down the road.
  • Depending on the time of year will depend what activities you may be able to do, later in the summer there is often blueberry picking at Blairgowrie, Pumpkin Picking at Broadslap Fruit farm or head over to Pitlochry to see the Dam or the enchanted forest. This is a lovely walk even when the forest is not illuminated.
