Our main point is that remember to “slow and steady”. We have compiled a few top tips.
• Knowing the size matters so much in terms for the height, width and length. We explore all of this in our handover but if your unsure please ask before you depart our depot.
• Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors. You will never have looked in a mirror so often after your motorhome holiday but it will quickly become a second nature and you will be doing it without thinking.
o Some vans have a blind spot while others don’t and its really important to know where yours are and how you need to position them.
o Not having a back mirror can be a bit of an adjustment but you will soon get used to it. The new van mirrors do offer fantastic visability however some of the narrower roads you need to slow right down to ensure its safe to go round corners.
o Reversing always needs a guide back! It may take you a few minutes longer to navigate the manoeuvre but you don’t want a holiday cut short by damage to your hotel on wheels.
• Planning ahead, and trying not to rush, allow yourself to slow down and embrace the trip rather than feeling like your are on a mission and a tight time schedule, as it can take the enjoyment out of your trip away. Look ahead for overhanging trees which are often worse in early spring after winter damage or in Autumn as the leaves come off and the weather worsens again.
• Cornering can be a concern for those who haven’t driven a larger vehicle before. However with a little care this can be easy. Slow down in advance of the corner, the advice is always to have finished breaking before you enter the corner and then using the accelerator to maintain your speed. This will ensure you remain balanced and improves the grip of the tyres on the road. The other thing to remember in our larger vans is the tail swing as you are turning therefore allow yourself more space before you start the manouver. If your unsure get a guide or take it very slowly.
We have blogs for those who have never hired or owned a motorhome before and they are to browse through and give you an insight into what may happen or could happen and reassure you that it really is the best way to explore Scotland.
