10 of The Best Fish and Chip Shops in Scotland

1.    Anstruther Fish Bar in Fife delivers some of the highest standards or fresh, quality and delicious seafood. There is a takeaway here and a restaurant. The owners have been fishers for generations and continue to be proud to serve the East Neuk of Fife in 2024. The “Catch of the Day” makes for a lovely surprise and gives you that guarantee it is the freshest produce you are consuming. There is a lovely children’s menu and adult menu alike clearly marked for allergens.

2.    Cromars is over in St Andrews in Fife and they have a wonderful outdoor seating area with canopies and heaters. Here you can sample local beers and ales and sit in the summer sunshine of Scotland. Established in 2013 they provide fresh, quality fish with a daily catch of the day. They also make a beautiful milkshake for something a bit different too.

3.    The Bay Stonehaven is just a beautiful setting with some outstanding food to go alongside the scene. This is one of our family favourites as they have a gluten free menu here including haddock, chicken fillets, sausages and their chips, mushy peas, gravy and tartare sauce available all year round. You can pre order your food and collect when you’re ready which is super handy.

4.    Frankie’s Fish and Chips over at the Brae in Shetland is amazing and is another favourite for our family as they have a separate fryer but be aware to plan ahead and contact them as the fryer is not always on and they will often have to put it on for you and it can take up to 50 minutes however it’s well worth the wait. The fish is so fresh and is not remotely greasy. Highly recommend if your over in Shetland. They have some wonderful sweet treats and home baking which is amazing.

5.    Fochabers Fish Bar in Moray is a lovely setting and you can walk parts of the Speyside way which is just beautiful and works off part of your treat of a tea. This is a family run business and they produce fresh cooked to order sea food. We have not been here for a while and they used to do gluten free items once a month on a Sunday but unsure if this is still the case and haven’t been able to figure out if they do.

6.    Oban Fish and Chip Shop is just outstanding and you can watch the fishing boats coming in. The seafood comes in from D Watt and Son the catch of the day is delivered fresh and the scallops are delicious. They have a restaurant here which gives a lovely option to sit down and embrace the atmosphere. Oban is a lovely fishing village and is a bustling little town with boats and tourists everywhere.

7.    House of Bruar is just up the A9 from our Scottish Tourer depot and provides a lovely stopping point for some lovely fresh cooked fish and chips. They often have lobster here. They have a wonderful main restaurant and the shops here provide plenty of extra things to do to pass an afternoon. Everything here is cooked fresh to order so be prepared to wait, but it is so worth the wait.

8.    The Chippy at Portree on the Isle of Skye is based right at the harbour with some outstanding views. Portree is a busy little town with lots of shops and a lovely art centre. Here there is your usual selection of fish and chips and freshly caught seafood of the day.

9.    Tobermory Fish and Chip Van The Fishermans Pier is a lovely van which stocks haddock, scampi, lemon sole and some delicious sides. They often have specials here of oysters, langoustines and trout so you may be in for an extra treat if you fancy something different.

10.    Crail Fish and Chip Shop is a quaint little shop in a quaint little town. It is however very busy and you often have to pre order or you could be waiting some time in the queue. It is  worth waiting or booking to sample their freshly cooked food. There is a small seating area but we have found it to always be full.

There is no shortage of fresh local fish to be had in Scotland, and anywhere you choose to travel will have somewhere local with fresh local produce. It really is worth trying them out if you have the time and are able to eat what they have on offer. We have tried to include some options for those who are gluten free and this is becoming more popular and more establishments are catering which is so helpful. It’s often best to phone ahead as sometimes they are able to cater for allergies but they need some advance notice.

There should be a fish and chip shop  for all locations and trips your headed on and be sure to share with us any others that you find along the way.
