Our west coast route includes the islands and honestly, it’s not a complete trip without leaving the mainland.
Calmac ferries do an island hopper ticket and their website is super simple, user friendly and full of information to begin your planning for your holiday. This just takes some of the stress out of the planning.
Oban is a great setting off marker where there are several good campsites and also excellent spots for wild camping if your like us and like to stay away from any hustle and bustle in the evenings. From Oban you can hop over to the Isle of Mull which is a lovely backdrop for your motorhome holiday. We have found Calgary Beach has some spots you can park up at for the night.
The Isle of Skye, once you would have needed to get a Ferry here however the bridge makes Skye super accessible and it’s a lovely drive over. From Skye you can head from Uig to Tarbet on the Isle of Harris. Here Horgabost honestly is home to the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. You will wake up to the most beautiful views and sights you will have dreamed about. The weather here can be tough at times but on a clear sunny day you will think you have travelled a million miles away.
From Harris you can travel across to the Isle of Lewis and then back onto the mainland via Ullapool. There is a lovely campsite here that overlooks the bay. From here we often find ourselves going across to Applecross and stopping at the Applecross Inn for some freshly caught food.
From Applecross head up the cattle pass which will offer you more spectacular views on Britain’s highest road. This is very achievable in our vans but just be mindful that you are a large vehicle, and this road is narrow with passing places.
Fort William has so much to offer as you continue your trip back on the mainland, we have a blog on activities to do in a motorhome here. Coming back down towards our depot in Perth you could stop in via Loch Lomond but in Summer this area can be very busy.
Top Tips to remember
1. Pack midge spray, candles or lotion! You really don’t want a dampener on your holiday over these little critters that can cause a lot of bother to many.
2. Be Mindful of your fuel, even although we take for granted that fuel stations are everywhere on many islands especially on a Sunday these remain closed and can at times be few and far between.
3. Make some plans and know where the ferry terminals are, how long before you need to arrive and a plan for where you are heading when you disembark from the Ferry.
