Looking to Buy a Motorhome

Looking to Buy a Motorhome

by Scottish Tourer May 13, 2025

Its an opportunity to purchase a well cared for vehicle that is under a year old (we do have some slightly older motorhomes on our fleet also if this was what you were looking for). The motorhomes are cleaned extensively in between each hire and you could expect to receive a motorhome that looks like new when you buy it.

•    Most of our customers choose to hire a motorhome prior to committing to buy one. This is for a variety of reasons such as,
o    Ensuring you pick the right layout, every model differs in the layout which will suit different people at different stages of their holiday experience. We have learnt over the years what used to suit us doesn’t anymore.
o    Knowing how much space you need, this often depends on what activities you do whilst you’re on holiday and how much storage you need, such as golfing, biking, paddleboarding or hill walking. Asking us how big the garage is and what other options for storage available can be helpful
o    Knowledge is power, and this is no different when it comes to motorhomes. If you know how to work the motorhome you’re buying it can be a huge comfort and you’re able to ask us questions prior to purchase.
•    Many customers do not set out to buy their own motorhome but after a few holidays it can often make financial sense to look at having one of your own. The benefits of having your own motorhome include not having to book at a specific time of the year, you can be packed and ready to go when you finish work on a Friday (one of our favourite perks of having bought one of our own).
•    You can tailor to your own requirements, this includes adding the accessories and internal items. It’s also handy to be able to leave things like a spare set of clothes, bedding and some non perishable food items.
•    You don’t have to empty the whole motorhome each time you come home from your holiday. I did not appreciate how much this makes the experience enjoyable. Such as not having to take out every item of food, bedding, games (we have a little toy box in ours for our children that we only use when away from home), spare clothes and other little but important to you things
•    Motorhome all year round, we often enjoy a trip away in winter, weather dependant on where we go but we have been known to head to Glenshee to stay the night and then sledge the next day or if there is enough snow ski. You are not restricted to when you can go on holiday as Scottish Tourer do not hire over the winter months.
Of course, like anything else there are some downsides to buying your own motorhome. So we thought we will mention these to just so your aware of some of the potential disadvantages of owning your own.
•    One disadvantage of buying a motorhome is the initial cost of purchase. The cost will depend on what you decide to purchase and your budget and there is usually one out there for all budgets and needs.
•    There is the possibility if you are not buying outright, of the monthly repayments if you have taken a loan to buy the motorhome and this is something to take into consideration.
•    The upkeep of the motorhome; with the hire motorhomes we fix them however if you own your won you need to keep on top of servicing, MOT and any repairs that need to be done. These can be costly and this is something else to be taken into consideration.
•    Finding out who will MOT and service your motohorme and who can repair them near you is something we would recommend.
There are many pros and some cons for buying and it really comes down to what suits you. If you have any queries or are interested in any of our hire motorhomes that will be for sale please do not hesitate to get in touch and we can advise you what we have available at this time.
