After a recent family trip to Arran we became very aware of the array of wonderful beaches that it held in its clutches. We thought it would be a great shame not to share some of the very best with you.We were incredibly lucky with the weather and had next to no rain and glorious sunshine everyday.
Blackwaterfoot is white, sandy and views to take your breath away. On a hot summer day the water is warm enough to brave a cold water swim and in the evenings the children enjoyed a clamber over the rock pools scattered down the shoreline. If golfing is your main enjoyment there is an added bonus of being right beside an excellent course and there is also a restaurant here to. There is a parking for motorhomes overnight which makes it a popular spot for tourists so be sure to get your spot early enough to not be disappointed.
North Sannox beach may not be sandy however it is a beautiful spot that catches the sun almost all day. There are bins for waste disposal and plenty of spots to explore. There are big rocks which are great for climbing over to the other bays and parts of the beach and give the children and adults a bit of adventure. There are shallow parts for paddling and we saw many people paddle boarding and swimming here. There is a large carpark and you can wildcamp too. There are also many forest walks to explore and spend your time taking in the beautiful scenery as the beach has views of the Goatfell Range.
Kilmory Beach is a quiet tranquil place to spend your day. This beach does require you to walk a little way to get here but it is worth the effort. It is a beautiful sandy beach with a glorious place to wild swim in the cold waters. You can cast your eyes over some magnificent views of Ailsa Craig.
Kildonan Beach or silver sands can be found at the southern tip of Arran. Here you can walk over some of the very best sand Arran has to offer and soak in the views of the mainland and Pladda. Here if you are lucky, you may even come across some seals basking on the rocks. The beach is located down some steps from the top of the cliff or it can be located from a walk from the campsite.
Cleats Shore is not for everyone being a nudist beach. However it has a mixed area of shingle and beautiful sand. Clothing is of course optional!
Brodick Beach is very central for the local shops. There is a grassy area with a play area, this beach can be very busy in the summer months however if you take a stroll down to Strabane Beach which is just beside Brodick, it is separated by the river Rosa but there is a footpath that takes you from one to the other. Strabane is a quieter area and much more tranquil.
Pirnmill Beach is yet another spectacular beach to visit. There are long stretches of sandy areas with fabulous views here and a set of swings just across the road to which is always a welcome stop off for those with small children.
This is a quick whistlestop tour of some of the beaches that we have come across on Arran. There are however many more that we are yet to explore. The vast number of beaches will mean you are never short of somewhere to go. The rocky beaches were a welcome change from the sand and are lovely to try skimming stones, picnics and of course searching the rock pools for wildlife.
